Liters to Fluid Ounces — Conversion Guide with Reference Tables

If you're looking at a beverage recipe that lists everything in liters but your measuring tools are marked in fluid ounces — or you're trying to figure out how many bottles to buy for a party — the liters-to-fluid-ounces conversion is one you'll use often. The relationship is fixed, but there's a catch worth knowing: the US fluid ounce and the UK (imperial) fluid ounce are slightly different sizes.

The Volume Converter handles both conversions instantly. This article covers the math, some reference tables, and the US vs UK distinction that trips people up.

US Fluid Ounces vs Imperial Fluid Ounces

The US fluid ounce and the imperial fluid ounce are not the same:

  • 1 US fluid ounce = 29.5735 mL
  • 1 imperial fluid ounce = 28.4131 mL

The difference is about 4%. For a single serving it's negligible, but across a full recipe or a large batch it adds up. A US recipe that calls for 32 fl oz is asking for 946 mL. The same number of imperial fluid ounces would be 909 mL — about 37 mL less.

In practice: if you're in the US or using a US recipe, you're dealing with US fluid ounces. If you're in the UK, Australia, or Canada and using a recipe or product label from those countries, it may use imperial fluid ounces. This guide covers both, but the US version is more commonly encountered internationally.

Liters to US Fluid Ounces

US fl oz = liters × 33.814

Examples:

  • 0.5 L = 0.5 × 33.814 = 16.91 fl oz
  • 1 L = 33.814 fl oz ≈ 33.8 fl oz
  • 1.5 L = 1.5 × 33.814 = 50.72 fl oz
  • 2 L = 2 × 33.814 = 67.63 fl oz

US Fluid Ounces to Liters

liters = US fl oz ÷ 33.814

Or equivalently: liters = US fl oz × 0.029574

Examples:

  • 8 fl oz = 8 × 0.029574 = 0.237 L (236.6 mL — one US cup)
  • 16 fl oz = 0.473 L (one US pint)
  • 32 fl oz = 0.946 L (one US quart)
  • 64 fl oz = 1.893 L (half a US gallon)
  • 128 fl oz = 3.785 L (one US gallon)

Liters to Imperial Fluid Ounces

If you're working with imperial fluid ounces (UK/Australia):

imperial fl oz = liters × 35.195

Examples:

  • 0.5 L = 0.5 × 35.195 = 17.60 imperial fl oz
  • 1 L = 35.20 imperial fl oz
  • 2 L = 70.39 imperial fl oz

Common Beverage Sizes in Both Units

Knowing where standard beverage sizes fall in both systems makes shopping and entertaining easier:

Wine:

  • Standard bottle = 750 mL = 25.36 US fl oz
  • Magnum = 1.5 L = 50.72 US fl oz
  • Double magnum = 3 L = 101.4 US fl oz

Beer:

  • EU standard can = 330 mL = 11.16 US fl oz
  • US standard can = 355 mL = 12 US fl oz
  • Pint glass (US) = 473 mL = 16 US fl oz
  • Pint glass (UK, imperial) = 568 mL = 19.22 US fl oz

Spirits:

  • Mini/airline bottle = 50 mL = 1.69 US fl oz
  • Half pint = 200 mL = 6.76 US fl oz
  • Pint = 375 mL = 12.68 US fl oz
  • Fifth = 750 mL = 25.36 US fl oz
  • Handle = 1.75 L = 59.17 US fl oz

Water/Soft drinks:

  • Standard bottle = 500 mL = 16.91 US fl oz
  • Large bottle = 1 L = 33.81 US fl oz
  • 2-liter = 67.63 US fl oz
  • US gallon jug = 3.785 L = 128 US fl oz

Why the Numbers Are What They Are

The US fluid ounce is defined as exactly 1/128 of a US gallon. The US gallon is defined as exactly 3.785411784 liters. So:

1 US fl oz = 3.785411784 ÷ 128 = 0.029573529... liters = 29.5735... mL

The imperial fluid ounce is defined as 1/160 of an imperial gallon. The imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 liters. So:

1 imperial fl oz = 4.54609 ÷ 160 = 0.0284130... liters = 28.4130... mL

Both are exact by definition — the only reason for the messy decimal values is that the metric and imperial systems weren't designed to align with each other.

For any conversion that isn't covered by the tables above, the Volume Converter will handle it — including milliliters, cups, quarts, pints, and gallons in both US and imperial versions.
