Square Meters to Square Yards — Conversion Guide for Flooring and Fabric

Square meters and square yards don't come up together as often as square meters and square feet, but when they do — flooring quotes, carpet purchasing, fabric orders, turf installation — getting the conversion wrong can mean ordering too little material or paying significantly too much.

The conversion is straightforward once you know the factor. The Area Converter handles it directly for any value. This article covers the formula, the reference numbers most people actually need, and the contexts where the conversion matters.

The Conversion Factor

1 yard = 0.9144 meters exactly (defined) 1 square yard = 0.9144² = 0.83612736 square meters

So:

  • Square meters to square yards: multiply by 1.19599 (or divide by 0.83613)
  • Square yards to square meters: multiply by 0.83613 (or divide by 1.19599)

The approximate relationship to remember: 1 square meter ≈ 1.196 square yards. About 20% more square yards than square meters for the same area.

Flooring: When This Conversion Matters

Carpet and some hardwood flooring in the US are sold by the square yard. Many flooring calculators and installation quotes give you a figure in square yards. If your room measurements are in meters — common in international contexts or when using European measurement tools — you need to convert.

A 4×5 meter room is 20 m². Converted to square yards: 20 × 1.19599 ≈ 23.92 yd².

Installers typically add 10–15% for waste, cutting, and pattern matching. So you'd order roughly 26–28 square yards for that room. If the supplier quotes by the square foot instead, note that 1 square yard = 9 square feet, so 23.92 yd² = 215.3 ft².

Why carpet is often priced per square yard: Carpet rolls are traditionally manufactured in widths of 12 feet (approximately 3.66 meters), and the industry settled on square yards as the billing unit. Some sellers have shifted to square feet in recent years, but many still use square yards — particularly for residential installation.

Fabric and Textile Measurements

Fabric is typically sold by the linear yard or linear meter — not square yards — but when you're calculating how much fabric covers a surface (upholstery, sail-making, tent fabric, canvas), area becomes relevant.

If you need to cover a surface of 8 m² with fabric, that's 8 × 1.196 ≈ 9.57 yd². For simple shapes this is straightforward; for complex shapes with seam allowances and pattern repeats, the effective area needed is higher.

Some fabric widths are given in yards (36 inches, 45 inches, or 60 inches wide) and length in yards. For a 60-inch-wide fabric:

  • 60 inches = 1.667 yards wide
  • Area per linear yard = 1.667 yd × 1 yd = 1.667 yd²
  • To cover 9.57 yd² of surface, you'd need 9.57 ÷ 1.667 ≈ 5.74 linear yards

Artificial Turf and Landscaping

Artificial turf in the US is frequently sold by the square yard. Garden spaces, sports fields, and landscaping projects need to be measured and converted if you're working with metric measurements.

A typical backyard lawn of 40 m² converts to 47.84 yd². Artificial turf rolls are typically 15 feet wide (5 yards), so for this size space you'd need a run of about 9.6 yards of a 5-yard-wide roll to cover it.

Real turf (sod) is sold by the square foot or square yard in the US, and by the square meter in most of the world. The same conversion applies for calculating how many pallets or rolls to order when the product specs are in different units than your measurements.

Quick Mental Math

If you need a rough estimate without a calculator:

  • Square meters × 1.2 ≈ square yards (within about 0.3%)
  • Square yards × 0.83 ≈ square meters (within about 0.7%)

These are close enough for planning purposes. For ordering materials, use the exact conversion factor or the Area Converter to avoid ordering shortfalls.

Example: A 12 m² bathroom needs tiling. Quick estimate: 12 × 1.2 = 14.4 yd². Exact: 12 × 1.19599 = 14.35 yd². The 1.2 approximation is accurate enough to know what to request in a quote.

How Square Yards Relate to Other Units

Square yards sit between square feet and square meters in size:

UnitApprox. size
1 square foot0.093 m²
1 square yard0.836 m²
1 square meter1.196 yd²

And for larger areas:

  • 1 acre = 4,840 square yards = 4,047 m²
  • 1 hectare = 11,960 square yards = 10,000 m²

For conversions between square meters and other area units — acres, hectares, square feet, square kilometers — the Area Converter covers all combinations in one place.
